Biodegradability of betaine

Betaine is widely found in animals, plants and microorganisms in nature. After the organism dies, betaine is released into the natural environment and used as a substrate for microbial growth. Microbes, both anaerobic and aerobic, are generally capable of degrading betaine.

The laboratory effect is flashed, and betaine can be completely degraded in sandy clay within 2 weeks under the action of microorganisms in the soil. According to big data, the biological oxygen demand of industrial-grade betaine anhydrous (content above 97%) is 1000mgO2/g betaine; the chemical oxygen demand (COD) is slightly higher, 1300mg O/g betaine; using dichromic acid Potassium (K2Cr2O7) as an oxidant has a measured chemical oxygen consumption (CODCr) of 70-100 mg O/g betaine.

The role of betaine in water environment

Betaine is present in many marine invertebrates, which are preyed on by fish and become an important source of betaine in fish. Adding betaine 2-15g/kg to the commercial feed of salmon can improve the feed attractiveness, promote growth and improve feed conversion rate.

Assuming that the daily feeding amount is 1%-8% of the body weight, and the betaine content in the feed is 2-15g/kg, then the daily intake of betaine by the fish through the bait is 20-1200mg/kg body weight. Long-term pilot studies have not found adverse effects.

The betaine content in muscle of juvenile salmon was 0.12-0.28g/kg and 0.7-0.9g/kg, respectively, when the diet containing betaine 15g/kg and the control diet were fed for 1-2 months. In contrast, it was found that the content of betaine in the muscles of crustaceans that humans often eat is 1-9 g/kg, while the content of mollusks is 6-14 g/kg.
